Ceramic corsets take people by surprise. No one believes they are real, until they touch them; no one believes they can be comfortable, until they've worn them. I treat my corsets like sculptures and enjoy every step in the process of their creation. In the six years I've been designing corsets, I've refined the process and made them for all types of people to be worn to a variety of events so the wearer can feel beautiful, unique, or even invincible.
The corset is an icon of the patriarchal constraints on women, the attempts to confine, bind and mold female sexuality into a pleasing, and helpless, shape. I have taken this symbol of oppression and reconstituted the corset, using ceramic as an expression of its fragility and artifice. In so doing, each piece becomes a statement and its bold individuality becomes a strident call of self-assertion.
Touch is a critical aspect of my work. My vibrant and textured ceramic corsets do not just invite viewers to brush their fingers over the crevices and curves, they demand it. My flair for creating innovative works of art that are as durable as they are eye-popping has incited a growing fan base among art and fashion communities across the nation and overseas.
Born into a family of artists, I continue to soak up a vast array of imagery to incorporate into my wearable sculptures. The ceramic structure then allows me to emulate anything from fine china, ruffles, and superhero costumes to battle armor, fairies, and fire. My designs range from waist-cinchers to full-bust corsets often made in separate pieces and bound together with ribbons, leather straps, or fabric with a glaze finish featuring textured and multicolored swirls and shapes that further enhance the overall design.
While ceramic corsets are among the most celebrated aspects of my work, my portfolio also includes wall hangings, tile, light switch plates, and jewelry.
Focusing on art as a full-time career as I market my corsets and tile along with parents’ art and husband’s light sculptures, I look forward to traveling the globe and working with new people as I continue to explore my inventive nature and delve further into the creative possibilities provided by working with such an exciting and versatile medium.
